Mendoza Vineyards Unsung Hero Malbec

2011  $13.99 (original price $42)
Mendoza, Argentina
PLCB Code# 72472

The 2011 Unsung Hero Malbec from Medrano is fermented in barrel and tank and aged in French Nadalie barriques for 12 months. It has an attractive, refined bouquet with earthy, leathery notes suffusing the crisp black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, with sharp acidity on the entry that needs to discover more harmony. That is a shame, because it is imbued with attractive dark berry fruit and has a lovely touch of sage and white pepper on the aftertaste. Drink now-2014.-NM

The nose on this is full of aromas of warm cherry, toasty oak and the inside of a leather shop… earthy flavors, overripe black fruit and a strip of leather running through it all. Again, as much as I like pretty leather shoes, I do not drink them (again: or from them). Some aerating smoothed out the taste a bit, so I’ll warn you to decant this one or use an aerator. So, for $12.99, it was an okay wine. For $42…not so much.

Mod intensity aromas of blackberries leather and licorice.  There is ripe blackberry fruit with medium body with mild pepper and a bit of a grip at the end.
