Spring Chairman’s Selection 2016

I recently attended the Spring Chairman’s Selection wine tasting.  Steve Pollack presented 46 wines, some of which have been already available in the State stores, and some of which are upcoming Chairman’s Selections.  There are a few currently available wines that I would recommend, and there are several wines that will be significantly discounted on June 27th that are worth picking up.
Availability may be limited so use the PLCB Code and the link below to find the stores that carry them.

Argiolas Costera Cannonau de Sardegna 2013

Sardinia, Italy
PLCB Code# 44302

The 2013 Cannonau di Sardegna Costera hits all the right buttons. This is a steady and well presented red wine from the heart of the Mediterranean. It shows a high level of confidence and boldness with big, black cherry aromas followed by more subtle nuances of spice, tobacco and freshly milled black pepper. Although the wine tastes very dry, it is not without its softness and plushness in terms of texture.
90 Points Wine Advocate 12/15
Vibrant and spicy, this savory red delivers aromas and flavors of ripe blackberry, black cherry, ground pepper and chopped Mediterranean herb. Firm, fine-grained tannins support the juicy flavors. An anise note backs up the finish.
90 Points Wine Enthusiast 10/5
There is a moderate amount of dried black cherry and plum fruit with oak.  This is moderately tannic and rustic overall-not “soft and plush” or “ripe” and “juicy” as described above.

Campo Alegre Blanco Verdejo 2012

Rueda, Spain
Chairman’s Select
PLCB Code# 78024

The 2013 Campo Alegre is fermented in 600-liter oak barrels (one third) and the rest in inox and it’s pure Verdejo, clean and subtle with citric notes of orange rind and grapefruit, fresh and balanced. Drink now-2016. Burdigala is the name of the joint-venture between Michel Rolland and the Lurton brothers.
89 Points Wine Advocate 8/14
Light, green-tinged yellow. High-pitched citrus and orchard fruit aromas show very good clarity and a hint of jasmine. Dry and nervy on the palate, offering juicy pear and Meyer lemon flavors and a hint of tarragon. Closes dry and spicy, with good lift and floral persistence.”
89 Points Vinous Media 9/14
Mild aromas of lime tropical fruit and orange.  The flavor is also mild with lots of acidity and medium body.  It is pleasant but quite simple.

Bodegas Cepa 21 Hito 2013

Ribera del Duero, Spain
PLCB Code# 44161

The 2013 Hito is an affordable young Tempranillo aged in barrels for eight months. It has a fresh, fruit-driven nose with a lot of toasty notes in the background. Here they want to show the character of the Tempranillo. It is a serious, textbook Ribera, with aromas of plums and dark cherries with herbal hints and winks of red fruit denoting freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine tannins and good acidity, although a little lean. This is not a banal young wine, it has a lot more stuffing than your average entry-level red. Drink now-2017.-LG
89 Points Wine Advocate 8/14
A young and intense Ribera del Duero with strong notes of graphite and black cherries, this wine’s tannins are rustic and wild, balanced by ripe blackberry flavors and detailed oak spice. Hito is Cepa 21’s basic red and one of the best values in the region.
91 Points Wine&Spirits
Aromas of earth and oak.  Ripe black cherry and plum fruit with mild oak flavors, but the tannins are overbearing at this point.  It definitely improved with aeration,; otherwise you should keep it in the cellar for a few years.

Zuccardi Q Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Valle de Uco, Medoza, Argentina
Chairman’s Selection
PLCB Code# 78104

The 2012 Q Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of grapes from La Consulta and Gualtallary in the Uco Valley, a ripe yet balanced red, with freshness and minerality along with grainy tannins, good balance, and aromas and flavors of plums and tobacco. Quite drinkable, it is a Cabernet that would do very well with asado. Drink now-2016.
89 Points Wine Advocate, 4/14
Finely crafted, with touches of elegance and plenty of freshness to the plum, cherry tart and boysenberry flavors, accented by forest floor notes. Mineral and spice details fill the lively finish. Drink now through 2019.
90 Points Wine Spectator 9/15
Mild aromas of red-black fruits with wood mint and a hint of sweetness.  There is mild ripe black cherry and plum fruit with medium body, medium+ tannin, oak and pepper on the finish.  It was definitely better with Ghirardelli chocolate.

94% Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere 3% and 3% Petite Verdot. The grapes come from old vineyards planted in the alluvial terraces of the Alto Maipo, extremely concentrated, and were handpicked.  ..aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. “It has an intense and deep ruby red color. The nose has aromas of currants, blackberries, sweet licorice and cedar notes that become soft and elegant. The palate is generous and rich yet fresh and vibrant again. The wine has plenty of fruit and firm tannins that give structure and depth.
Mild aromas of flower, mineral and herbs.  Ripe black cherry and plum fruit with lots of rustic tannin and medium acid on the moderate length finish.

Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2015

New Zealand

Scented of gooseberries, fresh pears and golden delicious apples, the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc offers a pleasant hint of herbal lift on the light to medium-bodied palate, though lacks a little in intensity and finishes rather abruptly. LP-B

Wente Vineyards Riverbank Riesling 2013

Arroyo Seco, Monterey, California
Chairman’s Selection
PLCB Code# 33893

In your glass it’s a golden ray of sunshine with grapefruit-honeysuckle perfume. A sip is strange – a good strange. Unlike any Riesling you’ve ever enjoyed, you still have your familiar refreshing lush tropical fruits and floral notes, but it’s also so unique with a smack of clove and grapefruit most likely brought to you by its 10% Gewürztraminer. It is perfectly balanced – the acid and light sweetness (that’s right, LIGHT sweetness – this is not your typical sweet-ass Riesling) give it a bright, fresh mouth-feel preserved by its being fermented cold and aged in stainless steel tanks. It’s 13% ABV and would go great with fruit, cheese or even a turkey sub.

Floral, lime and peach aromas.  It is moderately sweet with pineapple added to the citrus and peach flavors.  There is good acid to balance.  I thought that this was interesting,  pleasant and a great value if you like a slightly sweet Riesling.
